Shape scalable systems and architect the future of pet food innovation at Tails.com. Ready to lead the way?

Changing the world of pet food for good

We’re Tails.com, a dog food subscription company with a big difference. We create truly tailored food for each and every dog we serve. We start by asking people a few simple questions about their dog. Then we use that information to create their dog’s unique Tails.com recipe – so their dog gets exactly the nutrition they need, in the taste they love, delivered to their door every month. It’s clever stuff.

We’ve got bold plans. Having created an entirely new category in pet food, we’re now scaling fast in the UK and Europe – backed by Purina, one of the world’s largest pet food companies. You’ll join a bunch of smart people working towards the same goals – and a bunch of smart-ish dogs, all working on their own thing.

Together, we’ll change the world of pet food for good.

Architect Scalable Solutions and Shape the Future at Tails.com

As a Software Architect, you’ll become a key part of a forward-thinking team, crafting innovative, scalable solutions that power tailored experiences for dogs and their owners. Partnering closely with Engineering and Product teams, you’ll bring technical leadership and architectural vision to deliver impactful systems aligned with customer needs.

Your role will focus on designing and evolving a robust architecture, ensuring scalability, security, and alignment with our mission to revolutionise pet food. Together, we’ll drive technical excellence, inspire innovation, and shape a future where technology transforms the world of pet care for good.

Build our brand

We’re building an international brand fast. We set ambitious goals. We challenge and support each other in equal measure. At the pace we’re moving, we prefer to test ideas and learn quickly rather than spend months building a business case. That means we celebrate when things go right, and we learn when things go wrong.

Sound like a team you want to join? Here’s how you’ll make a difference:

The role

We are looking for an experienced Technical Architect with a strong background in D2C retail and/or manufacturing scale-up environments to lead the design and implementation of a scalable, resilient, and secure architecture. This role will involve high-level collaboration with engineering teams and broad collaboration across the manufacturing, delivery and supply-chain based and senior stakeholders to define and deliver on key architectural goals while ensuring best practices in development and delivery processes.

This role requires a balance of deep technical expertise, a broad knowledge of manufacturing and supply-chain management and the ability to coach and mentor teams. You will play a key role in guiding our engineering teams through this transformation, helping them adopt best practices while influencing senior management on the importance of a scalable, service-oriented approach.

You will be responsible for:

Lead the architectural design of scalable and secure systems, ensuring they align with the company’s growth objectives.
Provide architectural guidance to engineering squads, ensuring a clean, simple, and future-proof design.
Mentor and coach engineering teams on technical best practices, encouraging innovation and scalability.
Collaborate with senior leadership to communicate the benefits and value of architectural changes, fostering alignment and buy-in.
Drive a security-first mindset, ensuring that all systems adhere to best practices for security and compliance.
Champion Agile methodologies, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.
Balance the management of technical debt with the need for rapid development, helping teams make strategic decisions that support long-term scalability.

What experience you will bring:

Proven experience as a Technical Architect, Solution Architect, or in a similar role, with a track record of success in fast-paced, growing companies.
Hands-on experience working within scale-up environments, with a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with rapid growth.
Strong background in modern software architecture and distributed systems, with expertise in designing scalable, cloud-native solutions.
Deep knowledge of security principles and best practices, particularly within scalable systems.
A solid understanding of Agile methodologies, with experience leading and mentoring teams in Agile environments.
Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage and align both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Previous experience as an Engineering Manager or a leadership role within technical teams is highly desirable.
A background or strong understanding in geographically dispersed system integration, including IoT is desirable

We do this by conducting a structured recruitment process for all candidates, as well as actively promoting our roles to communities that are under-represented at Tails.com.

During your interview process you’ll meet some of our team with varying levels of responsibility and experience. We want to give every candidate a fair interview process and if you need any reasonable adjustments made, please let us know.

About the Company

Hi, we’re Tails.com. A pet food subscription company with a big mission. We believe there should be no average dog food because no dog is average. So we deliver 100% tailored nutrition to each and every dog we serve. It all starts with a few simple questions about your dog’s age, breed, activity level and flavour preferences. Then our experts create a one-in-a-million kibble blend – just for them. Everything they need and a taste they love, delivered to your door every month. It’s pretty clever stuff.
