Job Description
**Job Title:** NHS Locum Consultant – General Internal Medicine **Role Summary:** Provide consultant‑level inpatient care for acute general medical admissions on a 22–25 bed ward, with additional opportunities to support subspecialist outpatient work. Deliver clinical leadership, uphold patient safety, and contribute to ongoing service optimisation within the newly established General Internal Medicine Directorate. **Expectations:** - Deliver high‑quality, evidence‑based treatment to adult patients admitted acutely. - Participate in cross‑coverage to support colleagues during absences and high demand periods. - Engage in the Director’s optimisation plan, ensuring appropriate patient‑to‑ward matching and improves safety outcomes. - Thrive within a multidisciplinary team led by Specialty Doctors, a Senior Clinical Fellow, and Junior Clinical Fellows. **Key Responsibilities:** - Manage clinical care for all patients on assigned general internal medicine ward(s). - Attend ward rounds, review investigations, prescribe treatments, and coordinate care plans. - Provide oversight and mentorship to junior clinical staff. - Contribute to diagnostic accuracy, discharge planning, and implementation of best‑practice protocols. - Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, audit, and quality improvement initiatives. - Perform incident and morbidity and mortality reviews as required. - Offer subspecialist expertise in an outpatient capacity when indicated. **Required Skills:** - Clinical proficiency in acute adult medicine, including diagnosis, investigation, and treatment of common medical conditions. - Ability to lead a ward team, manage workloads, and support colleagues during cross‑covers. - Strong communication and interpersonal skills for patient discussion and multidisciplinary teamwork. - Expertise in clinical governance, audit, and continuous quality improvement. - Ability to prioritise tasks, manage time efficiently, and adapt to changing clinical demands. **Required Education & Certifications:** - MBBS/MBChB (or equivalent) and completion of postgraduate training to the level of Consultant in General Internal Medicine. - Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP, FCNP, or equivalent) or equivalent recognized specialty qualification. - Valid NHS locum or permanent consultant registration, with proven experience in acute inpatient medicine. **Additional (Optional) Requirements:** - Experience with care optimisation or patient flow initiatives. - NHS experience in a teaching hospital environment preferred.
