Job Description
Job Title: Legal Counsel Role Summary: Provide strategic legal guidance across a high‑growth AI technology company, focusing on open‑source licensing, intellectual property, data privacy, commercial contracts, and dispute resolution. Expectations: • Qualified solicitor or barrister in the UK or a Commonwealth jurisdiction. • 5+ years of legal experience, preferably in‑house counsel for a technology or AI firm. • Ability to operate in a fast‑paced, high‑intensity environment and deliver pragmatic legal solutions. Key Responsibilities: • Lead open‑source licensing compliance (AGPL‑3.0, MIT, Apache 2.0) and advise on permissible use of third‑party components. • Draft, review, negotiate and manage commercial agreements – including enterprise software licenses, partnership, and vendor contracts. • Develop and execute intellectual property strategy for models, software code, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. • Ensure product and platform compliance with global data protection regulations (GDPR, EU AI Act) and maintain privacy policies. • Counsel engineering and product teams during development to mitigate legal risks. • Manage and advise on IP infringement claims, commercial disputes, and other legal challenges. • Monitor emerging AI, technology, and ethics regulations and provide forward‑looking guidance. Required Skills: • Expertise in open‑source licensing, particularly copyleft and permissive licenses. • Strong command of IP law (trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets). • Proven experience with data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA) and drafting privacy policies. • Advanced contract drafting, negotiation, and transaction management skills. • Excellent analytical, problem‑solving and communication abilities, with the capacity to collaborate across technical and business teams. Required Education & Certifications: • Law degree and admission as a solicitor or barrister in the UK or a Commonwealth jurisdiction. • In‑house counsel experience in a high‑growth technology or AI company is preferred.
