Job title: Protection Engineer
Role Summary:
Perform advanced electrical protection engineering for transmission and distribution systems, including analysis, coordination, and relay settings. Support capital projects, field testing, and QA activities while ensuring compliance with NERC, WECC, and industry standards.
Expectations:
- 10+ years electrical engineering experience in utilities or equivalent.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Proven expertise in high‑voltage (12 kV–765 kV) protection, short‑circuit studies, and relay programming.
- Leadership in training and peer‑review of protection deliverables.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct short‑circuit and protection coordination studies for projects (DSP, TSP, SUB IR, DSERP).
- Model systems using CAPE, CYME, or equivalent; generate short‑circuit results, step‑distance, and pilot protection schemes.
- Develop and review protection settings (GE EnerVista/UR, SEL AcSELerator, EM relays) for 12 kV–765 kV networks.
- Issue and approve relay settings and field configurations via ASPEN relay database.
- Coordinate with neighboring utilities, balancing authorities, and internal engineering teams (substation, distribution, field technicians).
- Support Field Test Technicians during commissioning and in‑service operations.
- Travel to project sites for job walks, testing, and field support.
- Participate in QA reviews of protection deliverables (settings, logic diagrams, E‑files).
- Design and sign off on one‑line, elementary, and logic diagrams for substation expansion, automation, and infrastructure replacement projects.
Required Skills:
- In‑depth knowledge of NERC PRC 23/26/27, FAC‑008, IEEE, IEC, ANSI standards.
- Proficiency with GE, ABB, SEL relay platforms and their configuration software.
- Experience with signal and logic design (logic gates, latches, relay AC/DC schematics).
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
- Familiarity with digital protection concepts, symmetrical component analysis, and fault calculations.
Required Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- PE license.
- 10+ years of engineering experience in transmission/distribution protection.
