Veterinary Internship - Equine
Job Description
Job title: Veterinary Internship – Equine Role Summary: Two‑year, BEVA‑approved internship to develop clinical competence in equine medicine. Interns will rotate through 18 months of hospital‑based practice and 6 months of ambulatory care, gaining experience in emergency admissions, surgical procedures, diagnostics, dentistry, sport medicine, imaging, and routine visits. Participants work closely with senior clinicians, nurses, and support staff in a teaching environment, attending journal clubs, clinical rounds, and case discussions to foster evidence‑based practice and professional development. Expactations: - Commit to a full 24/7 rotation schedule within an accredited Tier 3 equine hospital setting. - Participate actively in all phases of case management, from client consultation through post‑operative follow‑up. - Attend mandatory teaching sessions, journal clubs, and clinical rounds. - Maintain high professional standards in patient care, hygiene, and documentation. - Demonstrate continual learning and constructive feedback acceptance. - Contribute to research and quality improvement initiatives as appropriate. Key Responsibilities: - Assess and manage emergency admissions, providing stabilisation and triage. - Assist or perform standing and general anaesthesia surgical procedures. - Conduct advanced diagnostics including imaging, laboratory tests, and clinical pathology. - Execute routine ambulatory examinations, dental care, and sport medicine evaluations. - Prepare case summaries, operative reports, and treatment plans. - Participate in client communication and discharge education. - Support mentoring of junior staff and student volunteers. - Contribute to case‑based teaching and discussion groups. Required Skills: - Strong clinical judgment and decision‑making in a dynamic veterinary environment. - Proficiency in equine handling, restraint, and anaesthetic techniques. - Basic diagnostic imaging interpretation (radiography, ultrasonography). - Effective communication with clients, colleagues, and interdisciplinary teams. - Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary squad. Required Education & Certifications: - Graduate of a recognized veterinary medicine program. - Eligibility for BEVA registration or equivalent national licensing. - Current and active registered veterinary practitioner status. - Completion of any prerequisite equine clinical exposure (e.g., 100+ hours).
