**Job Title**
Engineering Manager – Database Reliability
**Role Summary**
Lead a globally distributed team of database reliability engineers to design, operate, and scale high‑availability, high‑performance database systems (PostgreSQL, CockroachDB, and future platforms). Provide technical vision, coaching, and operational excellence to ensure continuous service availability for a rapidly growing user base.
**Expectations**
- Minimum 5 years managing database or storage teams.
- Proven people‑management skills: coaching, performance evaluation, career development.
- Strong project‑management experience: prioritisation, schedule tracking, cross‑functional communication.
- Experience running production‑grade on‑call rotations, incident response, post‑mortems, load testing, and capacity planning.
- Hands‑on database administration in production (replication, HA/DR, backups, migrations).
- Familiarity with Kubernetes‑based DB workloads, Cloud (preferably GCP) or datacenter environments, and Terraform.
- Ability to travel to operational markets (≈6 days/year).
**Key Responsibilities**
- Guide the database reliability team in architecting, maintaining, and evolving resilient database environments.
- Mentor and develop engineers across multiple time zones.
- Design and refine on‑call, incident‑response, post‑mortem, load‑testing, and capacity‑planning processes.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, product, and security teams on platform‑wide database initiatives.
- Lead monitoring, performance tuning, and cost‑optimisation efforts for PostgreSQL, CockroachDB, and future systems.
- Own hiring cycle: forecast staffing, craft interview loops, evaluate candidates, close offers.
- Foster a culture of reliability, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
**Required Skills**
- **Database Expertise:** PostgreSQL, CockroachDB (plus other relational or NoSQL engines).
- **Infrastructure:** Kubernetes, container orchestration, GCP, Terraform, or equivalent.
- **Operations:** Replication, HA/DR, backups, migrations, capacity planning, load testing, monitoring, alerting, cost optimisation.
- **Leadership:** Coaching, performance management, career development.
- **Project Management:** Prioritisation, schedule tracking, cross‑team communication.
- **Hiring:** Interview design, candidate assessment, offer negotiation.
**Required Education & Certifications**
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Relevant certifications (optional but advantageous): Google Professional Cloud Architect, Certified Kubernetes Administrator, PostgreSQL Administrator Certification, or similar database‑specific credentials.
