**Job Title:** Sr. Systems Engineer
**Role Summary:**
Senior Systems Engineer – contract (12 months). Responsible for managing and optimizing Windows Server environments (2008–2019), ArcGIS Server and Portal deployments, network & application infrastructure, and monitoring tools. Provides on‑site support (4 days/week), leading complex technical initiatives and ensuring high availability of critical geospatial services.
**Expectations:**
- 12‑month contract, US Citizen only, 4 days on‑site/week, availability for on‑call and after‑hours support.
- Independent, initiative‑driven; collaborate with a team of systems engineers and .NET application support staff.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Administer Windows Server 2008‑2019: AD, GPOs, firewall, SSL/TLS, NAT, load balancing, clustering, patching, and upgrades.
- Install, configure, and maintain ArcGIS Server (v10.5.1+), Workflow Manager, Portal for ArcGIS, Web Adaptor, license manager, and shared config‑stores.
- Deploy ArcGIS map documents (MXD, SD, SDE, AGS, JTC) and support publishing pipelines.
- Manage IIS, Tomcat, and Apache web servers, ensuring proper integration for ArcGIS services.
- Monitor system health with SCCM/SCOM/Nagios; configure alerts, reports, and performance tuning.
- Troubleshoot complex server, network, and application issues; analyze load, identify bottlenecks, and recommend optimizations.
- Lead or participate in architecture, integration, and internet/intranet deployment projects for .NET and other VDOT applications.
- Document and refine processes, propose improvements, and execute change management.
- Participate in after‑hours and on‑call duties as required.
**Required Skills:**
- Windows Server administration (2008–2019) with Active Directory, Group Policy, firewall, SSL, NAT, load balancing, and clustering expertise.
- ArcGIS Server, Workflow Manager, Portal for ArcGIS, Web Adaptor, license management, and GIS map publishing.
- IIS, Tomcat, Apache configuration and integration.
- Networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, VPN, DNS, routing, NAT, load balancing, failover.
- Monitoring & alerting tools: SCCM, SCOM, Nagios.
- Scripting: Python; JSON manipulation; browser dev tools for GIS debugging.
- Troubleshooting, performance tuning, capacity planning, and root‑cause analysis.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and in a team; proactive, solution‑focused mindset.
**Required Education & Certifications:**
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of systems administration experience.
- Certifications preferred: Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) in Windows Server, ArcGIS Desktop or Server certification, CCNA/CCNP, ITIL Foundation.
- U.S. Citizen status mandatory.
