Job Description
Job title: Anesthesia Assistant Role Summary: Provides anesthesia support to patients undergoing surgical procedures. Works under the supervision of an Anesthesiologist, monitoring anesthetized patients, administering agents, and ensuring patient safety and comfort before, during, and after surgery. Acts as a collaborative team member with nursing staff to deliver comprehensive peri‑operative care. Expectations: - Perform duties safely and competently in a fast‑paced operating room environment. - Maintain accurate documentation and communication with anesthesia and surgical teams. - Uphold high standards of patient safety, infection control, and equipment readiness. - Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work all shifts. Key Responsibilities: - Assist with patient induction: administer prescribed anesthetic agents, monitor for side effects, and assess physiological status. - Provide diagnostic data to the Anesthesiologist/Surgeon: blood gases, pulse oximetry, transcutaneous monitoring, end‑tidal CO₂. - Support pre‑operative preparation: complete pre‑op assessments, insert IV, nasogastric, and endotracheal lines, and position patients appropriately. - Maintain and troubleshoot anesthesia‑related equipment. - Monitor patients in the anesthesia block room and during operative procedures. - Ensure adherence to all safety, infection control, and protocol requirements. Required Skills: - Clinical knowledge of anesthetic agents, cardiorespiratory monitoring, and patient physiology. - Proficiency in inserting IV, nasogastric, endotracheal lines and positioning patients. - Ability to interpret vital signs, blood gases, and respiratory monitoring data. - Competence in using anesthesia equipment and maintaining sterility. - Strong teamwork, communication, and documentation skills. - Commitment to patient safety and adherence to institutional protocols. Required Education & Certifications: - Advanced Diploma in Respiratory Therapy **or** Undergraduate degree in Nursing. - Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistant from a CSRT‑accredited program. - Registered and in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario **or** College of Nurses of Ontario. - Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification (mandatory). - Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (preferred). - Current Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (preferred). - Minimum of 2 years current experience as an Anesthesia Assistant in an OR setting. - 3–5 years experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist or Registered Nurse in Critical Care, Emergency, or Operating Room.
