Job Description
Job title: System Supervisor I Role Summary: Operate and supervise the electric system at a Distribution Control Center, Subtransmission Control Center, or Bulk Electric System Power Switcher (BPS) within a System Operations Center (SOC). Ensure reliable, secure operation of the electric grid by directing switching, tagging, and load management, maintaining NERC cyber and reliability compliance, and coordinating restoration of service to customers during normal and emergency conditions. Expectations: - Maintain continuous certification at a primary SOC position after initial training, including red‑tag qualification and NERC System Operator certification if assigned to BPS. - Rotate periodically as Dispatch Supervisor, applying load‑flow and security analysis to maintain system integrity. - Comply with all NERC standards and conduct regular network‑security studies. - Coordinate multi‑disciplinary teams and union contractors for system maintenance, restoration, and equipment commissioning. - Deliver on performance metrics, budget targets, and safety goals. Key Responsibilities: - Direct and execute switching, tagging, and load‑interrupt actions across distribution, sub‑transmission, and bulk‑electric systems. - Monitor power‑system security, enforce voltage and security limits through generation re‑dispatch and load control. - Conduct network‑security studies assessing impacts of generation or network changes. - Manage restoration of internal or inter‑company transmission, sub‑transmission, and distribution paths to minimize customer impact. - Coordinate shutdown requests, balancing production schedules, equipment capability, and cost. - Inspect, approve, commission, and decommission system equipment. - Maintain NERC cyber and reliability compliance, including periodic audits. - Administer union contracts and coordinate work rules for maintenance and operations teams. - Lead or support field crews, set priorities, and authorize overtime as needed. Required Skills: - In‑depth knowledge of electric power system operations, switching, tagging, and load management. - Proficiency with NERC cyber and reliability standards and compliance procedures. - Strong analytical skills for security studies and load‑flow analysis. - Effective coordination and communication with internal teams, private entities, and governmental agencies. - Knowledge of OSHA Lock‑Out/Tag‑Out (LOTO) procedures and safety practices. - Ability to manage union contractors and adhere to work‑rules and budgets. - Familiarity with corporate policies and operational protocols. Required Education & Certifications: - Minimum: High School Diploma (or equivalent) + 3 years of job‑relevant operating experience with completion of a basic electricity course; OR Associate’s degree in a technical discipline + 1 year of job‑relevant operating experience with basic electricity course. - Must complete the DTE SOC System Supervisor certification program within the initial training period, including red‑tag qualification. - System Operator/Power Dispatcher test – “Acceptable” grade. - NERC System Operator certification required for BPS assignments. - OSHA LOTO experience (preferred).
