Industrial Placement Student
**Role Summary**
Provide day‑to‑day laboratory support for normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) experiments, including solution preparation, perfusion circuit assembly, blood cell saving, sample processing, data recording, and laboratory maintenance. Work on a rotating schedule that includes day and night shifts, and participate in experimental design discussions and protocol development.
**Expectations**
- Participate in a structured induction and ongoing training program.
- Work full time on a rota (days and nights) while maintaining laboratory standards and safety.
- Act as a core member of the team, collaborate with academic and clinical experts, and contribute to meetings, presentations, and project updates.
- Receive regular mentoring from a Senior Scientist and scheduled one‑to‑one progress reviews.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Weigh, mix, and pH‑balance perfusion solutions.
- Assemble and set up normothermic perfusion circuits, including blood‑cell‑saver machines.
- Prepare and draw therapeutics required for each experiment.
- Conduct blood‑cell‑saving procedures on experiment days.
- Operate NMP systems, monitor physiological parameters, perform arterial blood gas analysis, collect samples, and manage post‑experiment clean‑down.
- Label, process, aliquot, freeze (liquid nitrogen, OCT), and store samples with traceability.
- Record all data accurately in paper and electronic forms.
- Maintain stock levels, order supplies, and coordinate with stock control.
- Organise and store chemicals, fluids, and gases following safety protocols.
- Review relevant literature to support protocol discussions and experimental planning.
- Attend laboratory and monthly presentation meetings, contributing updates and insights.
- Perform general laboratory upkeep, ensure a clean environment, and enforce safety guidelines.
**Required Skills**
- Laboratory technique: pipetting, centrifugation, basic dissection, suturing, liquid nitrogen handling.
- Knowledge of porcine anatomy and basic surgical procedures.
- Ability to prepare and handle perfusion solutions and therapeutics.
- Data entry, record‑keeping, and laboratory documentation.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
- Adherence to safety procedures and laboratory protocols.
**Required Education & Certifications**
- Current enrolment in or completion of a degree in Biomedical Sciences, Physiology, Biotechnology, or related field.
- No specific professional certification required; willingness to complete on‑the‑job training in NMP and related skills.
