**Job title:** Principal Officer – Landscape Casework **Role Summary:** Provide high‑level specialist advice on protected landscape impacts for major infrastructure projects across England. Oversee National Landscape Planning responsibilities, deliver expert analysis of LVIA/SLVIAs, manage the High Risk High Opportunity case pipeline, and act as an expert witness at NSIP, Local Plan and Public Inquiry hearings. **Expectations:** - Deliver expert landscape assessment for developer‑led impact documents. - Provide national oversight of high‑risk cases and coordinate with Area Teams. - Maintain a quality‑assured pipeline of commissioned landscape advice. - Proactively engage stakeholders, conduct site visits, and present evidence at hearings. **Key Responsibilities:** - Review and advise on technical landscape impact documentation (LVIA/SLVIAs). - Lead national oversight of High Risk High Opportunity cases affecting Protected Landscapes. - Ensure the Landscape Planning Network records all relevant cases via engagement with Area Teams. - Prioritise cases by risk to Protected Landscapes and allocate resources accordingly. - Manage and quality‑assure landscape specialist advice commissioned through planning framework contracts. - Act as expert witness for Natural England at NSIP examinations, Local Plan examinations and Public Inquiries. - Liaise directly with developers, Area Teams and external stakeholders to clarify impact assessments. - Conduct site visits across England to assess landscape impacts and gather evidence. - Prepare and deliver presentations and written evidence for hearings and inquiries. **Required Skills:** - Advanced knowledge of landscape planning, protection of landscapes, and statutory frameworks (NSIP, NLPA, etc.). - Strong analytical and advisory capabilities. - Excellent stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills. - Experience in conducting expert testimony and presenting in hearings. - Ability to manage complex casework, prioritise risk, and deliver high‑quality outputs. - Proficiency in report writing, evidence presentation, and use of landscape assessment software/tools. **Required Education & Certifications:** - Bachelor’s degree (or above) in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning, Geography, or a closely related field. - Professional qualification or recognized training in landscape planning and environmental assessment is desirable.
