Job Description
Job Title: Locum Consultant Microbiologist Role Summary: Provide expert clinical microbiology and virology services, diagnosing and managing infectious diseases, maintaining laboratory standards, and mentoring junior staff in a hospitals’ microbiology department. Expectations: - Deliver high‑quality diagnostics and patient management for complex infectious cases. - Lead antibiotic stewardship and infection control initiatives. - Supervise laboratory operations to ensure timely and accurate results. - Serve as an advisor to clinicians, supporting evidence‑based decision making. Key Responsibilities: - Provide advanced clinical advice to clinicians on infection management. - Analyze, interpret, and present complex microbiological data, including antimicrobial resistance profiles. - Conduct ward rounds, including ITU visits, and participate in on‑call advisory services. - Oversee diagnostic workflow, specimen examination, and quality assurance of lab procedures. - Collaborate with infection control teams on outbreak investigations and prevention strategies. - Develop and update clinical guidelines, SOPs, and antimicrobial use protocols. - Communicate findings and treatment options to patients and multidisciplinary teams. - Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary teams, delegating tasks and prioritising clinical care. - Perform administrative duties such as record keeping and reporting of laboratory results. - Educate and train junior doctors, medical students, and allied health professionals. Required Skills: - Clinical microbiology and virology expertise, including experience with MRSA, C. difficile, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B/C and emerging viruses. - Proficiency in laboratory diagnostics, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and data interpretation. - Strong antibiotic stewardship and infection control knowledge. - Leadership and team‑management capabilities. - Excellent communication skills for patient interaction and inter‑professional collaboration. - Ability to develop clinical protocols, SOPs and contribute to guideline creation. Required Education & Certifications: - GMC registered doctor (Specialist Register not required). - Medical degree (MBBS/MD) with completed specialty training in clinical microbiology or equivalent. - Demonstrated experience as a consultant‑level microbiologist. - Relevant microbiology qualifications (e.g., Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists, MSc/MPhil in Microbiology or Virology) are favorable.
