Job Description
**Job title:** Phlebotomist **Role Summary:** Delivers accurate, timely specimen collection and processing for both outpatient and inpatient settings. Interprets laboratory orders, performs venipunctures and specimen preparation, and ensures compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality standards while maintaining professional patient interaction. **Expactations:** - Maintain specimen integrity and accuracy to support diagnostic results. - Adhere to all institutional protocols, quality improvement initiatives, and regulatory requirements. - Demonstrate courteous, patient‑centered communication and service. **Key Responsibilities:** - Perform venipuncture and other specimen collection techniques. - Identify and apply correct tube type for each test. - Confirm patient identity and label samples accurately. - Process specimens: centrifuge, aliquot urine, separate plasma/serum when required. - Release ambulatory orders from HIS, enter outside orders into LIS. - Manage requisitions, data entry, and telephone inquiries. - Scan bar‑coded samples and prepare packing lists for transport. - Troubleshoot difficult orders and missing specimens. - Assist nursing staff and educate patients, students, or other staff. - Maintain inventory of phlebotomy supplies. **Required Skills:** - Proficient in venipuncture and specimen collection protocols. - Strong knowledge of pre‑analytical variables (patient ID, tube type, timing, temperature, centrifugation). - Ability to use Hospital Information System (HIS) and Laboratory Information System (LIS). - Basic data entry and bar‑coding proficiency. - Excellent patient communication and AIDET customer‑service skills. - Problem‑solving and troubleshooting of specimen or order issues. - Multitasking in a fast‑paced environment. **Required Education & Certifications:** - High school graduate or equivalent. - Phlebotomy certification or completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program. - Less than 1 year 6 months of experience in a clinical laboratory or phlebotomy setting.
