Job Description
Job title: Data Protection Manager Role Summary: Lead and coordinate the Data Protection Service for schools and academies, ensuring all activities comply with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and relevant statutory guidance. Provide expert support on data breaches, subject access requests, freedom of information requests, and integrate data protection responsibilities with broader governance matters such as complaints and pupil exclusions. Expectations: - Deliver a compliant, high‑quality Data Protection Service. - Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of ICO, DfE, and other regulatory updates. - Develop and deliver training and communication tools for staff, governors, and stakeholders. - Provide clear, practical advice and maintain confidential records in line with regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities: - Oversee DPO services for subscribed schools and academies. - Act as primary coordinator for all data protection matters within the service. - Ensure alignment with UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, and evolving legislation. - Monitor data breach responses, manage SARs and FOIs. - Update and maintain service documentation, policies, and guidance. - Provide briefing material and attend governing board/trust meetings. - Lead training workshops and develop a comprehensive training program. - Issue regular updates, alerts, and briefings on legislative changes and emerging risks. - Support schools with formal complaints processes and pupil exclusion administration. - Maintain accurate, confidential records of complaints, exclusions, and related documentation. Required Skills: - Proven experience in a data protection compliance role, preferably in education, public, or regulated sector. - In‑depth knowledge of UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. - Experience supporting operational teams in schools or trusts. - Strong administrative and organisational capabilities, especially with complex procedures (complaints, exclusions). - Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to give clear, authoritative advice. - Interpersonal skills to liaise with governors, staff, and external stakeholders. Required Education & Certifications: - Recognised data protection or information governance qualification (e.g., BCS, IAPP) or equivalent.
