Job Description
Job title: Student/Graduate Environmental Officer Role Summary: Support the development, evaluation, and implementation of environmental, resilience, and waste management strategies and plans within a local government setting. Provide research, analysis, and advice to inform policy and decision-making, while maintaining natural assets and fostering stakeholder collaboration. Expectations: - 2‑year contract, 35 hrs per week, 9‑day fortnight. - Completion of at least 50 % of a relevant tertiary qualification or graduation in 2025. - Demonstrated flexibility, strong communication, problem‑solving, and professional conduct. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related systems. Key Responsibilities: 1. Assist in developing, reviewing, and updating the Environment and Resilience Plan, Urban Forest Strategy, and Resource Recovery & Circular Economy initiatives. 2. Conduct research, data analysis, and prepare timely reports, briefs, and funding options to support council decisions. 3. Identify and plan for current and future demands on council and community assets, and formulate strategies and policies to address identified needs. 4. Support the maintenance and management of natural environment and open space assets to achieve sustainable outcomes. 5. Build and sustain collaborative relationships with council departments, government agencies, and community stakeholders to advance council objectives. 6. Promote a culture of transparency, ethical behavior, and professional decision‑making. 7. Collaborate with the team, manager, and key stakeholders to meet business unit goals and council priorities. 8. Undertake other reasonable tasks assigned by the supervisor. Required Skills: - Analytical and research proficiency with the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable recommendations. - Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills. - Stakeholder engagement and relationship‑building capabilities. - Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making skills. - Adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic work environment. - Competence in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software. - Ethical, professional conduct and adherence to council values. Required Education & Certifications: - Completion of at least 50 % of a tertiary qualification in environmental science, environmental management, sustainability, or a related field, or graduation in 2025. - Relevant certifications (e.g., environmental management, sustainability) are an advantage but not mandatory. - Must be willing to undergo Criminal History Check, Medical Check, and Working With Children Check as required.
