Job title: CSU Brussels_Database MySQL Assistant
Role Summary:
Support and maintain MySQL database environments, including installation, configuration, and optimization of single‑node and clustered instances. Ensure high availability, performance, and security through routine maintenance, backup, recovery, and user administration.
Expactations:
- Deliver reliable database services that meet service‑level agreements.
- Maintain documentation for configuration, procedures, and recovery plans.
- Collaborate with infrastructure and network teams to optimize database performance.
- Adhere to strict security and least‑privilege access controls.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install, configure, monitor, and upgrade MySQL servers (standalone and Galera/Percona Cluster).
- Perform schema housekeeping, index maintenance, statistics updates, and data retention tasks.
- Manage MySQL users, roles, privileges, and authentication methods per security best practices.
- Design, implement, and test backup and point‑in‑time recovery strategies using mysqldump, mysqlpump, Percona XtraBackup, or equivalent.
- Analyze and optimize query performance using execution plans, indexing, and server tuning.
- Troubleshoot database, operating system, and network issues impacting performance or availability.
- Produce clear, concise documentation and standard operating procedures.
Required Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of SQL optimization, indexing, and query execution plans.
- Expert proficiency in MySQL backup/restore tools (mysqldump, mysqlpump, Percona XtraBackup, etc.) and point‑in‑time recovery techniques.
- Strong foundations in Linux system administration (I/O, file systems, network basics).
- Experience managing MySQL user accounts, roles, and least‑privilege security models.
- Familiarity with MySQL clustering/replication and high‑availability concepts.
- Ability to analyze performance metrics, create tuning recommendations, and implement changes.
- Excellent documentation and communication skills.
Required Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., MySQL Database Administrator, Oracle Certified Professional, Linux Professional Institute Certification) preferred but not mandatory.
