**Job Title:** Research Scientist **Role Summary:** Develop and advance scientific models for severe natural hazards (wildfire, flood, windstorm) within a high‑tech insurance engineering division, handling the full data‑to‑implementation cycle and collaborating with multidisciplinary scientists and engineers. **Expactations:** - Deliver high‑quality, reproducible research and code on schedule. - Communicate findings and technical decisions clearly to internal stakeholders and external experts. - Maintain statistical rigor and credibility throughout model development and validation. **Key Responsibilities:** - Design, implement, and calibrate mathematical and numerical models for natural hazard risk. - Clean, integrate, and evaluate diverse datasets (satellite imagery, GIS, weather, environmental). - Write modular, high‑performance Python code for scientific computing. - Conduct literature reviews and engage industry experts to formulate solutions. - Perform model validation and benchmarking against historical events using GIS tools. - Manage project priorities, timelines, and deliverables independently. **Required Skills:** - Proficient in Python for scientific computing (performance‑optimized code). - Strong foundation in applied mathematics/physics, numerical methods, differential equations, optimization, uncertainty quantification, Monte Carlo simulation. - Experience with statistical analysis of large, multi‑dimensional datasets. - Familiarity with GIS tools and geophysical data processing. - Ability to conduct independent research and collaborate in interdisciplinary teams. - Preferred: prior catastrophe modeling experience (flood, wildfire, severe weather). **Required Education & Certifications:** - BSc, MSc, or PhD in Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related field with a demonstrable research record. - No specific professional certifications required; post‑PhD experience in academia or industry is advantageous.
