**Role Summary**
Senior database subject‑matter expert responsible for the long‑term performance, scalability, and resilience of Progress OpenEdge environments. Leads proactive analysis, architecture design, tuning, and disaster recovery for mission‑critical databases, and mentors cross‑functional teams on best practices.
**Expactations**
- 20–25 years of IT experience, with a minimum of 5 years managing mission‑critical Progress OpenEdge databases.
- Proven track record of designing high‑availability, scalable database architectures and leading enterprise‑wide backup, restore, and DR initiatives.
- Ability to present data‑driven recommendations to senior leadership and influence technology strategy.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Conduct regular in‑depth performance analysis (VSTs, query plans, ABL interactions) to anticipate growth and prevent issues.
- Architect and implement scalable, high‑availability Progress OpenEdge solutions, including disaster recovery, replication, and DR drills.
- Develop and manage advanced monitoring (e.g., ProTop) to track database health and performance metrics in real time.
- Fine‑tune database parameters, indexing strategies, and storage layouts for optimal performance and resource utilization.
- Design, implement, and manage enterprise‑wide backup and restore using PROBKUP, PROREST, RFUTIL, and related utilities.
- Enforce database security policies, manage user access, and ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks: schema updates, index rebuilds, data dumps/loads, and storage management.
- Create and maintain automation scripts (Shell, Python, Perl) to reduce manual effort and lower risk.
- Collaborate with security, infrastructure, and application teams to align database strategy with broader enterprise goals.
- Document best practices, procedures, and architectural designs for knowledge transfer.
**Required Skills**
- Deep expertise in Progress OpenEdge 12.x architecture and DBA utilities (PROBKUP, PROREST, RFUTIL, PROENV shell).
- Advanced performance tuning using VSTs, DBTOOL, and related tools.
- Strong scripting abilities in Shell (bash/ksh), Perl, or Python for automation.
- Solid understanding of Linux/Unix operating systems and file system management.
- Excellent verbal and written communication; adept at explaining complex concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
- Experience with disaster recovery planning, replication strategies, and high‑availability design.
- Proven ability to mentor teams and influence technology direction.
**Required Education & Certifications**
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (preferred).
- Progress OpenEdge certification (e.g., Progress OpenEdge DBA, Developer) highly desirable.
- Additional certifications such as PMP, ITIL, or OS-specific (Linux) certifications are a plus.
