Airworthiness Safety Lead – Future Combat Air Systems
**Role Summary**
Lead airworthiness safety engineering for the Global Combat Air Programme, ensuring compliance with UK Military and EDA EMAR Part 21 regulations and partner nation requirements. Serve as the primary safety and regulatory subject‑matter expert, guiding product development, certification, and safety assessment across the multinational supply chain.
**Expectations**
- Deliver airworthiness safety expertise in multinational GCAP forums and design reviews.
- Maintain current knowledge of UK and EDA regulatory frameworks and advise on partner‑nation compliance.
- Provide safety‑centric consultancy to product teams, ensuring designs are manufacturable, safe, secure, fit‑for‑purpose, and reliable.
- Develop and deliver regulatory training, safety assessments, and certification documentation.
- Support integrated safety management and enabler initiatives (people, process, tools, data).
**Key Responsibilities**
- Represent Leonardo as Airworthiness Safety SME in GCAP and global working groups.
- Participate in the Office of Airworthiness & Qualification, working with Domain Engineering and Technical Office.
- Collaborate with Design Integrity, Safety, and Airworthiness Security leads to maintain consistent safety approach.
- Monitor regulatory changes, assess impacts, and recommend responses.
- Advise GCAP product development teams on safety and certification requirements.
- Conduct safety assessments using ARP4754B, ARP4761A, Def Stan 00‑56, 00‑55, FHA, PSSA, SSA, FMEA, FTA, etc.
- Review Integrated Project Team Safety Management Plans for policy compliance.
- Support Enablers Work Pack Product Owners in delivering safety‑related enablers (people, process, tools, tech, data).
- Deliver training courses and presentations on regulatory, governance, and certification matters.
**Required Skills**
- Aerospace engineering with specialization in airworthiness.
- Master’s level qualification in aerospace or related discipline.
- Hands‑on experience with UK Military Aviation Authority, EASA, CAA, or equivalent in airworthiness certification.
- Deep understanding of Type Certification, major/minor change approvals, and regulations: UK MAA MRP, EASA CS‑25, Def Stan 00‑970, EDA EMAR Part 21, MIL‑HDBK‑516, etc.
- Proficiency with safety assessment methods (FHA, PSSA, SSA, FMEA, FTA).
- Knowledge of software/hardware certification standards (DO‑178C, DO‑254, DO‑297) and airworthiness cyber‑security (DO‑326A, DO‑355A, DO‑356A).
- Experience in design reviews, audits, regulatory compliance meetings, and interpreting system architectures and interface control documents.
- Strong technical writing, safety reporting, and certification documentation skills.
- Coaching and consulting experience delivering certification or safety services to multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate confidently with senior stakeholders and product teams.
**Required Education & Certifications**
- Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field.
- Relevant industry certifications preferred (e.g., ARP4754/4761, EASA, UK MAA).
- Security clearance: BPSS with potential NSV (SC/DV) as required.
