NHS Lothian & Borders Staff Bank – Interpreter (Band 4) / Qualified Interpreter (Band 6)
**Role Summary**
Provide professional interpretation services for NHS Lothian & Borders patients and staff across a wide range of medical specialties. Work on an as‑needed, demand‑driven basis with flexible shift patterns. Deliver accurate, confidential, culturally sensitive interpretation in the appointed languages, supporting patient access to quality healthcare.
**Expectations**
- Deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred interpretation consistently.
- Commit to scheduled shifts and respond promptly to online or phone booking requests.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to NHS values and policies.
- Demonstrate professional, empathetic communication and cultural competence.
- Complete mandatory induction and ongoing training.
- Provide at least two referees confirming ≥3 years of relevant employment for reference checks.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Interpret verbal communication between patients and healthcare professionals in written and spoken form.
- Support clinical assessments, consultations, treatments, discharge planning, and administrative interactions.
- Manage interpretation for a range of specialties (women’s health, general medicine, paediatrics, mental health, etc.).
- Ensure accuracy, completeness, and fidelity of all interpreted content.
- Maintain professional boundaries, notice confidentiality, and follow relevant legal and regulatory frameworks.
- Keep schedules and availability up‑to‑date in the Staffing Service system.
- Participate in staff induction and any required ongoing professional development.
**Required Skills**
- Fluency in one or more of the languages listed (Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Dari, Farsi, Greek, Indonesian, Kurdish (Kurmanji, Sorani, Badhini), Italian, Latvian, Pashto, Portuguese, Romanian, Ukrainian, Thai, Tigrinya, Turkish, Twi, Vietnamese).
- Strong verbal and written communication in English; competence in medical terminology.
- Professionalism, reliability, and cultural sensitivity.
- Ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and adapt to fluid scheduling demands.
- Commitment to confidentiality and regulatory compliance.
**Required Education & Certifications**
- Minimum of a qualified interpreter credential for Band 6 (e.g., certification from relevant interpreting bodies).
- For Band 4, proven interpreter competence, evidenced by work experience or accreditation.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification encouraged but not mandatory.
- Any additional qualifications in language proficiency or medical interpreting preferred.
