Job Title: Senior Cloud Systems Engineer - AWS Lead
Location: Remote (U.S. Based) or Hybrid from San Diego, CA
Compensation: $140,000-$160,000 base + 15% annual bonus potential
Work Authorization: U.S. Citizens or Green Card holders only
Employment Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire
Travel: Up to 5% (primarily to company HQ in San Diego, up to 1x/quarter)
Work Hours: 8AM-5PM Pacific Time (Required)
On-Call Rotation: Once every 5 weeks (PagerDuty; $60/month reimbursement)
About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Cloud Systems Engineer with deep expertise in AWS to join a collaborative, highly technical infrastructure team supporting mission-critical enterprise systems. You'll play a lead role in cloud infrastructure automation, cost optimization, and solution architecture, while mentoring developers and engineers on best practices.
This role is well-suited for someone with strong ownership, cloud security know-how, and a desire to simplify and modernize infrastructure at scale. You'll partner with DevOps, Security, and Architecture teams to streamline deployments and drive cloud transformation.
Key Responsibilities
Lead design, automation, and implementation of AWS cloud infrastructure using IaC (Terraform or CloudFormation)
Drive cloud strategy, architecture planning, and technical roadmap execution
Develop, maintain, and scale secure, compliant, cost-optimized infrastructure across hybrid and multi-cloud environments
Support cloud governance initiatives, tooling, and best practice documentation
Act as a thought leader within the infrastructure team and provide mentorship to peers and developers
Collaborate with security, risk, and compliance to ensure architecture meets audit, regulatory, and internal policy standards
Translate business and technical requirements into scalable cloud architecture
Required Skills & Experience
7-10 years of cloud engineering experience, primarily with AWS
Advanced expertise in VPC, DataSync, EC2, Lambda, CloudFormation or Terraform
Experience with data migration and application modernization
Strong background in Linux administration, with working knowledge of Windows systems
Familiar with routing, firewalls, load balancing, and network architecture
Comfortable working cross-functionally and presenting to both executive stakeholders and technical teams
Skilled in Jira, Confluence, and collaboration in agile/hybrid development environments
Demonstrated success in infrastructure cost optimization, security hardening, and process automation
Nice to Have
AWS Certifications (Solutions Architect, SysOps Admin, or DevOps Engineer)
Experience with GCP or Azure, and multi-cloud migration projects
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automation tooling
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
Experience integrating SaaS and on-prem systems with Azure Active Directory, SSO/MFA
