The Anahtar and Lemieux Laboratories at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) seek an accomplished, motivated data scientist interested in the field of infectious disease to work on a variety of NIH- and CDC-funded projects analyzing microbial genomic data and integrating it with clinical data. The ideal candidate will have at least 1 year of experience in a data science-related field (e.g., statistics, machine learning, bioinformatics), fluency with at least one of programming language such as R and Python, interest in machine learning theory or implementation, and an interest in solving biological problems using large datasets including genomic and clinical data. Experience with biological databases and electronic health record data and an interest in infectious disease/microbial genomics research would be a plus.

Job Summary

Responsible for combining research in biology, medicine, and health-related studies with information technology in order to collect and interpret data covering a range of fields, such as genetics or pharmaceutics. They create mathematical models, develop dynamic simulations, and perform pattern analyses of biological systems.

Essential Functions

Assist in the analysis of biological data using bioinformatics tools and software.

Perform data processing, quality control, and database maintenance.

Collaborate with research teams to understand their data analysis needs.

Support the development and implementation of data analysis pipelines.

Conduct basic statistical analyses and data visualization.

Participate in the interpretation and presentation of results.

Working under very general supervision, the Bioinformatics Analyst will have demonstrated independent design and innovation in one or more of the following areas of specialization: algorithm development, data analysis, quality assurance/testing, pipeline software/computing development, user interface design & report development, web-based application development, or report development.

Education

Master's Degree Computational Biology preferred or

Bachelor's Degree Computational Biology required

Computational Sciences Experience 0-1 year preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Demonstrated experience in infrastructure, programming languages and computational sciences.

Demonstrated ability working with open-source bioinformatics software.

Possess strong analytical skills including critical thinking, data modeling, problem solving and troubleshooting.

Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, to all levels of staff.

Excellent time management skills.
