Contract Mechatronics Engineer (Outside IR35 | Hybrid) - Renewable Energy for Sub-Saharan Africa

Location: Hybrid - Remote with regular on-site work in London

Contract Type: Outside IR35

Duration: 6 months (initial), potential to extend

Start Date: ASAP

Rate: Competitive (Outside IR35)

Are you a Mechatronics Engineer with a strong background in product design, control systems, and electrical layout? Want to apply your expertise to a purpose-driven project delivering renewable energy solutions to communities across Sub-Saharan Africa?

Our client - a mission-led engineering organisation - is seeking a hands-on contract Mechatronics Engineer to support prototyping and product development at their London-based site. The focus is on developing scalable, resilient hardware to enable access to off-grid, clean energy.

Key Skills & Responsibilities

Strong SolidWorks capability for mechanical and electromechanical design
Hands-on prototyping and support of product development at the London site
Design and layout of electrical systems (low-voltage DC preferred)
Experience with control systems integration - ideally in renewable or off-grid tech
End-to-end product design - from concept through to build and test
Collaboration with electronics, embedded systems, and operations teams
Supporting documentation including BOMs, schematics, and assembly drawings

Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Background in mechatronics, mechanical, or electromechanical engineering
Experience with renewable energy systems, off-grid tech, or sustainable hardware
Practical, hands-on approach with a focus on building and testing prototypes
Comfortable splitting time between remote work and the London site
Strong problem-solving skills and an eye for real-world, cost-effective design
