Summary
State-of-the-art video codecs rely heavily on transform coding as a core tool to efficiently represent video signals. Recent advances in video coding research have introduced learned and non-separable transforms, which offer significant potential for further compression gains. This internship will be carried out within the R&I video coding team in Montreal and will focus on familiarizing with these novel transforms, analyzing their behavior, and investigating strategies to improve their effectiveness. The work may involve designing content-adaptive approaches, refining training methodologies, and benchmarking performance against existing coding standards such as HEVC and VVC. The student will gain hands-on experience with both Python and C++ development in the context of a cutting-edge video coding framework, while building strong expertise in digital signal processing and transform coding techniques.
Responsibilities
Roles and responsibilities involve:
reviewing literature on transform coding,
familiarizing with the existing video coding standards (such as HEVC, VVC),
improving transform training algorithms,
testing enhanced transforms in the test model software using scripts provided by the team.
Qualifications
Knowledge in digital signal processing
Proficient Python and C++ coding skills
Knowledge of video coding is preferred not mandatory
Keywords
Video Coding, HEVC, VVC, Digital Signal Processing, C++, Python
Expected Outcomes
Produce datasets and transforms using the scripts provided by the team.
Improvement of the scripts and integration of the new transforms in the C++ code of the reference software.
Produce results and benchmark the different approaches investigated.
Produce a report on the work carried out during the internship
Make an end-of-internship presentation to the whole R&I team
Location: Montreal, Canada
