Job Description
The Capital Markets and Factor Investing Department ("CMF") invests assets globally in public equities, fixed income securities, currencies, commodities, and derivatives, and manages the engagement of investment managers and co-investments in public market securities. We are currently recruiting for an Analyst within the External Portfolio Management ("EPM") team. The role is based in Toronto.
EPM is a group within CMF responsible for allocating capital to external managers in public markets across all trading styles, asset classes, and geographies. EPM oversees a portfolio of externally managed funds and separate accounts and has relationships with over 60 of the world's top hedge fund managers. EPM forms long term partnerships, irrespective of whether the underlying fund strategy is short- or long-term in nature. The group also makes co-investments alongside external managers.
The Analyst will play a key role in supporting the research, evaluation, and monitoring of EPM's hedge fund partnerships within Fundamental Strategies (Equities and Credit). The role will also contribute to EPM's co-investment activities, assisting in due diligence and ongoing monitoring of the existing portfolio. Working closely with senior team members, the Analyst will help prepare investment recommendation materials for new opportunities and track portfolio developments to ensure the team remains informed of major changes and emerging trends.
In addition, as part of the broader EPM platform, the Analyst will contribute to assessing and monitoring the hedge fund manager landscape. This includes reviewing investment proposals across a broad range of strategies and styles, helping the team identify and evaluate opportunities in an evolving market environment.
Accountabilities
Assist with monitoring hedge fund and co-investment portfolios, including tracking performance, preparing review materials, and staying on top of market developments.
Support the evaluation of new investment opportunities by gathering data, conducting research, and helping prepare investment recommendation materials.
Contribute to coverage of Equity and Credit hedge fund managers, helping track peers and identify potential opportunities.
Participate in meetings with external managers, take notes, and summarize key takeaways for the team.
Help coordinate with internal groups (Risk, Legal, Tax, Operations) during the investment approval and implementation process.
Contribute to team discussions, portfolio reviews, and broader EPM initiatives and projects.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a finance-oriented discipline (e.g., Business, Economics, Mathematical Finance, Financial Engineering).
An advanced degree or certification (CFA) is an asset.
Up to 3 years of relevant work experience in equity research, investment banking, investment management or consulting.
Prior experience in hedge funds or fund-of-funds is an asset but not required.
Strong research, analytical, financial modeling, valuation, problem solving skills and ability to think creatively.
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Bloomberg. Experience with Tableau, Python, or other programming languages is an asset, though not required.
Exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to produce high-quality written work and quantitative analysis.
Solid verbal and written communication skill
