We're building a voice-first future for ordering and service experiences - and at the heart of that is a reliable, intelligent backend that connects seamlessly with Menu, LLMs, POS, and many other integration paths.
You will be working on multiple backend stacks ranging from menu, to the Voice AI application itself, to configuration servers. We need people that can be thrown into any software challenge and provide highly scalable solutions in an independent fashion.
Responsibilities
Write reusable, testable, and efficient code (with a huge emphasis on testable code) for various backend and application systems at Presto Phoenix.
Design and develop scalable APIs, services, and scalable databases
Understands how to set up the proper scaling strategy for their products.
Understands best practices for security and data protection
Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code
Optimize applications for maximum performance, scalability, and reliability (uptime is a huge thing here)
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features
Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback
Troubleshoot and debug production issues
Contribute to architectural decisions and technical documentation
Qualifications
4+ years of experience
Proficiency in one or more backend languages (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java, Go, Ruby)
Working experience with Large Language or Small Language models [can be either the producer or consumer of a LLM or SLM].
Ability to create well designed and highly accurate testable prompts
Experience with Websocket frameworks, RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs
Deep understanding of concurrency, threading, and multiprocessing and best practices for avoiding unoptimized threading and deadlock situations.
Understanding of relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB), Redis,
Deep understanding of APIs (REST, gRPC), webhooks, and data syncing patterns
Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) and CI/CD tools
Experience with version control (Git) and agile development practices
Familiarity with event-driven architecture and message queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ)
Knowledge of performance optimization
Nice to have
Experience with voice or conversational interfaces (especially ordering flows)
Experience with ASR
Experience with LLMs or SLM
Experience with training models
Understanding of inventory management, modifiers, pricing rules, and ordering logic on Point of Sale Systems from an API perspective
Prior work on restaurant tech, retail systems, or delivery platforms
Contributions to open-source POS integration libraries or SDKs
The U.S. base salary range for this position is approximately $120,000 - $155,000 annually + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all U.S. locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. At Presto Phoenix, it is not typical for the individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role; compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each case.
