Job Specifications

As the Field Research Assistant, your responsibilities will include operating and maintaining research field equipment, assisting in the timely execution of field activities, including seeding, spraying, and harvest, across our canola breeding program. Your expertise in equipment operation, maintenance, and repair will help to ensure the success of our field trials and the generation of high-quality data. In addition to equipment-focused work, you will work with our team to help plan and collect accurate trial data.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate a wide range of specialized research equipment, including planters, combines, sprayers, and tillage machinery, with a high degree of precision.

• Perform routine maintenance, preventative care, and in-season repairs on research equipment to ensure operational readiness and minimize downtime.

• Manage the logistics of equipment, including loading, safely hauling, and unloading at various field research sites.

• Safely operate a forklift to accomplish a wide range of tasks.

• Collaborate with the research team on project planning and trial execution, helping to provide key input on equipment capabilities and field logistics.

• Assist with field data collection, ensuring accuracy and contributing to the overall quality of research data.

• Champion the site's safety culture, ensuring all tasks are completed in accordance with safety policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Commitment to working safely and promoting a safe work environment for all.

• A strong mechanical background with proven problem-solving skills for diagnosing and repairing equipment.

• Experience operating and maintaining heavy or complex machinery (e.g., agricultural, construction, oilfield).

• Physically able to perform tasks that require lifting, bending, and working for extended periods.

• Self-motivated and able to complete tasks effectively, both independently and as part of a team.

• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and work extended hours during peak seasons (seeding and harvest).

• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

• Must be able to successfully pass pre-employment checks, including a criminal record check.

Preferred Experience & Skills

• Direct experience with agricultural equipment such as tractors, combines, and sprayers.

• Valid Class 1 or Class 3 Driver's License with experience hauling equipment.

• Alberta Pesticide Applicator License.

• Welding and fabrication experience.

• Experience with plot research and precision agriculture technology (GPS, data management systems).

• Experience training seasonal employees.

• Completed diploma or degree in Agriculture, or a related field.
