Engineering Team Lead | TypeScript | React | Node.js | AWS | £110,000 + 10% Bonus | Hybrid (3 Days in Maidenhead)
This is an opportunity to step into a hands-on engineering leadership role where your technical judgement, communication skills and delivery focus will shape the next stage of a major digital transformation programme.
The organisation is modernising long-standing, operationally critical systems and replacing fragmented, paper-led processes with modern, cloud-based platforms. As Engineering Team Lead, you will take ownership of the technical direction and delivery for one of the company’s core product areas. You will guide a team of engineers, set engineering standards and work closely with product leadership to deliver reliable, scalable software that directly supports real customers and staff.

What you will be working on
You will lead engineering for a key product area such as digital services, operational workflows, legal service tooling or plan-based products. Your work will cover a mixture of modernisation, new feature delivery and technical strategy.
You will have the opportunity to:
Build and maintain TypeScript applications across React, Node.js, APIs and backend services.
Consolidate multiple inherited and legacy systems into a modern, unified architecture.
Shape scalable and maintainable backend and API design.
Deliver new product functionality that supports a wider and more complex set of user needs.
Improve engineering quality through better SDLC practices and shared standards.
Support a migration to AWS and help introduce more modern DevOps and CI/CD workflows.
Build internal tools and customer experiences that materially reduce manual work, improve accuracy and increase delivery speed.
Technology environment
The engineering environment is modern and TypeScript-first.
Frontend
React, TypeScript, shared component libraries, design systems and multi-brand interfaces. Redux is used today, although there is openness to more modern state management approaches.
Backend
Node.js with TypeScript, REST APIs, SQL and NoSQL databases and integrations with internal and external services.
Infrastructure
AWS (post-migration), Terraform, GitHub Actions and a service-oriented approach supported by mature SDLC practices.
What you will bring
This role suits a technically strong engineering leader who remains close to the codebase while setting a clear direction for the team.
You should bring:
Experience delivering technical products in both leadership and individual contributor roles.
A solid background in backend and systems architecture, particularly for web-based platforms.
Strong familiarity with JavaScript, Node.js, React and modern API and database design.
Experience working in fast-paced, product-led environments, ideally with exposure to direct-to-consumer products.
Evidence of building and supporting high-performing engineering teams.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate technical detail into clear, practical language for different audiences.
High levels of resilience, emotional maturity and commercial awareness.
A natural comfort with responsibility and ambiguity, with the ability to prioritise well and focus on outcomes

In this role, you will:
Own the technical strategy for your specific product area and shape its long-term trajectory.
Lead and coach engineers, ensuring high standards, strong performance and a collaborative culture.
Increase delivery velocity by reducing technical complexity and improving team focus.
Ensure systems are reliable, secure and aligned to customer and business needs.
Partner closely with product managers and wider leadership to deliver clear business value.
Provide technical oversight across backend, API and database design, ensuring scalability and maintainability.
Step in to support senior engineering leadership when required, offering stability and clear direction for your team.
Working pattern
The role is hybrid with a requirement to be in the Maidenhead office for at least three days per week. This is essential as it enables collaboration with senior stakeholders, product managers and other engineering leaders, and supports the wider culture of partnership between product and technology teams.
