Founding ML Research Engineer – Deep Tech / AI for Scientific Discovery

Location: London (3 days on-site per week)

An exciting opportunity has emerged for a pioneering Research Engineer to join an early-stage venture at the forefront of AI-driven materials innovation. Acting as the bridge between research and engineering, this role is ideal for someone who thrives in hands-on, experimental environments and wants to help shape the technical foundation of a groundbreaking product. With roughly a 70/30 split toward engineering, you’ll be instrumental in transforming novel ideas into real, scalable systems.

What you’ll be working on

Designing and managing training and inference pipelines—covering distributed training, data preprocessing, and deployment workflows.
Building research tooling and infrastructure to speed up iteration across simulation, experimentation, and AI-based reasoning.
Prototyping and assessing new machine learning algorithms alongside scientists and research teams.
Improving performance, reliability, and reproducibility across HPC clusters, cloud environments, and experiment interfaces.
Supporting data curation, management, and evaluation for both structured and unstructured scientific datasets.

What you’ll bring

2+ years of experience in a research or engineering setting.
Strong, practical software and ML engineering skills.
A comfort level working in exploratory environments where rapid iteration is key.
A passion for pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery through automation and machine learning.
