Summary:

The City of Markham is experiencing significant growth. As a result, the Development Services Commission is looking for a university/graduate student who is a dedicated self-starter to work in our fast-paced environment by assisting with project management support and research to implement strategies and projects related to development application review processes. The successful candidate must have a good understanding of project management methodology and principles. This position reports to the Project Manager, Strategy & Innovation Team.

The summer student position will provide project management support, research, and analysis within the Strategy & Innovation Team.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Provide in-depth technical assistance, research and evaluation of development application processes
Assist with coordination and documentation of processes and procedures related to development application process improvement projects
Undertake and/or assist with research and implementation of new projects
Assist with analyzing and reporting of development application indicators
Research emerging project management principles, planning & development issues
Assist project managers on key issues that arise during projects
Prepare meeting agendas and minutes
Prepare presentations using PowerPoint

Qualifications:

Currently enrolled in a University program in Public Administration, Business Management, Urban Planning, Engineering or related field
Demonstrated experience in researching complex issues
Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and planning processes
Good report writing and communication skills
Must have good analytical and organizational skills
Proficiency in Microsoft suite of products
Proficiency with video conferencing software including Zoom and Microsoft Teams
Must have well developed computer skills
Must be highly motivated and have good communication skills
Must be able to contribute positively to a respectful professional environment

Duration and Hours:

Beginning of May to August 2026
Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, 35 hours per week (excluding Holidays)

Location: On-site at the City of Markham office located at 101 Town Centre Boulevard, Markham, ON
