Head of AI – Global Multi-Strategy Fund - Multi-Billion Dollar Hedge Fund - London
A leading multi-strategy hedge fund is seeking a Head of AI to architect, build, and scale the firm’s next-generation AI and machine learning capabilities. This is a highly technical leadership role suited to someone who can operate at depth across ML research, LLM engineering, data architecture, and high-performance systems, while partnering with investment teams to deliver tangible commercial impact.
The successful candidate will own the full AI roadmap—designing advanced model pipelines, building robust ML infrastructure, and leading a team of exceptional engineers to push the boundaries of applied AI within a demanding trading environment.
Key Responsibilities
Define and drive a long-term AI strategy focused on cutting-edge engineering, model quality, and scalable production deployment.
Build and lead an elite AI/ML engineering team, establishing best-in-class practices across experimentation, model training, evaluation, and monitoring.
Design and develop core AI systems including LLM-powered tooling, feature engineering pipelines, deep learning models, reinforcement learning agents, and workflow automation.
Partner closely with platform engineering to create high-performance, cloud/on-prem hybrid ML infrastructure enabling rapid research and secure, low-latency productionisation.
Collaborate with quant, systematic, and discretionary teams to identify opportunities for model integration, execution optimisation, and data-driven alpha support.
Oversee model governance, technical risk management, testing frameworks, and rigorous validation protocols.
Evaluate emerging AI technologies, foundation models, and architectural innovations to maintain a front-edge capability.
Candidate Requirements
10+ years of hands-on experience in machine learning, deep learning, or AI systems engineering, ideally in a trading, quant research, or high-scale tech environment.
Exceptional Python engineering ability and strong command of modern ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX).
Deep understanding of LLMs, representation learning, sequence modelling, RL, or large-scale optimisation.
Experience designing and deploying production-grade ML systems with strong reliability, performance, and observability standards.
Proven leadership experience with the ability to recruit, mentor, and inspire high-calibre engineers.
Comfort operating in high-intensity, intellectually demanding environments where technical quality and delivery speed are critical.
