Job Description
XR applications offer visualization and interactivity possibilities that go well beyond what 2D video can provide. Such applications rely on 3D data like point clouds or dynamic meshes and are specialized to the needs of their scenarios: entertainment, communication, automotive, digital twins, medical imaging, remote training etc. Efficient compression, decompression and rendering of the 3D representations is important for enabling high quality 3D experiences for mobile devices. Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) have recently produced various standards for compressing point clouds (V-PCC, G-PCC) or immersive video (MIV), and is now focusing on Gaussian Splats that offer real-time and photorealistic immersive video experiences. Nokia Technology Standards is at the forefront of these standardization efforts. This internship will focus on the exploration of new coding technologies in this context.
How You Will Contribute And What You Will Learn
Design and develop new algorithms for coding Gaussian splats
Test and evaluate the new algorithms in the context of standardization
Present results to the team and interactively improve the algorithms based on the team’s feedback
Collaborate with the team on standardization-related technical tasks
Key Skills And Experience
A master’s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Vision or equivalent. Having experience in research (for example, having started a Ph.D. or having published scientific publications) is a plus
Strong C++ and python skills
Experience and skills in Computer Vision, especially on Gaussian splats is a plus
Enthusiasm and perseverance to reach results with the team
It would be nice if you also had:
Familiarity with Gaussian splat coding approaches, video codecs and standardization
Scientific publications on Gaussian splat or point cloud coding
Experience in running simulations on compute clusters
