About The Role

The Ambience Clinical AI Engineer plays a critical role in deploying and enhancing our clinical AI platform, impacting millions of patient encounters across the nation’s largest health systems. This position involves owning and developing evaluation and release infrastructure, observability tools, debugging systems, and data pipelines that ensure the quality and reliability of our AI models. The engineer will design and implement systems that enable rapid iteration and continuous improvement, facilitating teams to ship confidently and address issues proactively. Responsibilities also include building patient chart retrieval layers, supporting customization for different clinical workflows, and ensuring the performance and reliability of in-house models. This role requires a hybrid work model based in San Francisco, with a commitment of three days per week onsite, and offers a unique opportunity to influence the technical direction of a high-growth healthcare AI platform.

Qualifications

7+ years of experience in software engineering, including 3+ years focused on ML infrastructure, platform engineering, or data systems
Proven experience with backend development in Python, TypeScript, or similar languages
Experience building evaluation systems, data pipelines, or ML observability infrastructure
Strong understanding of MLOps from both ML and engineering perspectives
Track record of developing platform solutions that accelerate other teams’ productivity
Experience owning cross-cutting infrastructure and influencing technical direction across multiple teams
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment
Comfortable working in a hybrid environment with in-person collaboration in San Francisco three times a week

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain evaluation and release infrastructure, including automated graders and release gates
Create unified evaluation dataset versioning and execution workflows to streamline model deployment
Implement production quality monitoring with end-to-end tracing, shared metrics, and automated alerts
Build debugging tools such as encounter replay systems and diff views to reproduce and analyze regressions efficiently
Design and develop the chart context retrieval layer, pulling relevant patient history into model-ready formats
Establish feedback loops that convert real-world usage data into training signals for continuous model improvement
Create infrastructure supporting clinician and site-specific customization, enabling scalable configuration of workflows and defaults
Ensure model serving performance and reliability, including capacity planning, setting SLOs, and managing regressions
Collaborate closely with product and clinical teams to understand requirements and deliver scalable solutions
