AI Center Of Excellence – AI Engineer Intern Job Description
About Xerox AI Center of Excellence
The Xerox AI Center of Excellence (AI CoE) is responsible for delivering material, measurable business impact through the strategic use of AI. Our work spans generative AI, agentic systems, enterprise AI platforms, and operational transformation.
At Xerox, success in AI is not measured by the number of models deployed, but by the value realized. We believe that AI ROI is ultimately a human problem, influenced by trust, adoption, workflow fit, and the meaningful value it delivers to both customers and employees. Because of this, we invest not only in advanced technology and engineering talent, but also in understanding the human systems that make AI successful.
Why This Role Matters
AI only creates value when people use it, trust it, and integrate it into everyday work. This internship exists to ensure that human factors—adoption, experience, culture, and trust—are deeply embedded in Xerox’s AI strategy.
Role Overview
We are seeking an AI Engineer Intern to work alongside Data Scientists, AI Engineers, and Software Engineers to develop and deploy AI applications. You will contribute to real initiatives by building AI-enabled features, developing prototypes, supporting data pipelines, and collaborating in an agile delivery environment.
This is a hands-on engineering internship: you will write code, test solutions, and help deliver AI capabilities that can move toward production with appropriate governance and controls.
Intern Opportunities and Scope
Build AI applications with a cross-functional team of Data Scientists, AI Engineers, and Software Engineers.
Develop internal applications using Large Language Models, including RAG techniques and agentic AI architectures.
Work with platform/engineering partners to develop and support Agentic and Generative AI solutions.
Extract key information from unstructured natural language (and potentially multimodal) datasets to enable downstream automation and decision support.
Collaborate with Data Science and Data Engineering teams to build robust ML models and the associated data pipelines that power them.
Learn and apply tools available within our cloud infrastructure to make processes more efficient and AI applications more powerful.
Operate within an agile team structure, helping plan sprint work items and deliver iterative value.
Intern Project
During the internship, you will complete an individual or small-team project culminating in a final written and verbal presentation describing:
The problem addressed
The approach and implementation
Testing and validation performed
Next steps for scaling and production hardening
Internship success Criteria
The intern’s work materially contributes to the development and/or deployment of at least one active AI initiative.
Complete the internship project, prepare and communicate an executive ready presentation.
Learn meaningful skills to prepare them for future roles in enterprise environments including: confidently preparing and presenting their findings, clearly explaining the business value of an AI Solution, and navigating ambiguity, incomplete information and competing stakeholder perspectives.
Key Responsibilities
Define project objectives, scope, and success criteria with an AI CoE Manager or Lead.
Analyze and synthesize findings into clear insights and recommendations.
Prepare an executive-level presentation summarizing findings and risks.
Present project outcomes to AI leadership and management.
Participate in feedback sessions with stakeholders for professional development.
Educational Qualifications
Actively enrolled in an accredited institution pursuing a degree in IT, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
Programming experience (Python preferred; other modern languages acceptable).
Familiarity with basic data structures, APIs, and software engineering practices.
Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
Ability to work 40 hours per week (Monday–Friday).
Ability to work on-site at the Lexmark office in Lexington, KY, at least 3 days per week (Tuesday & Thursday required, plus one additional day).
