Senior Backend Engineer

London-based tech company helping clients engage in marketing strategies with audiences in virtual worlds.

Your Focus:

As a Senior Backend Engineer focused on Data Pipelines and API Optimisation, you’ll be central to our platform's performance and scalability. You’ll design, build, and iterate on the systems that handle data ingestion, transformation, and delivery - ensuring they are scalable, reliable, and performant.

You should have a strong background in backend engineering, particularly around distributed systems, database optimisation, and API development. You’ll work with technologies like JavaScript and TypeScript to build robust services that meet high standards for performance and reliability.

This role is ideal for someone experienced, self-driven, and excited about leading backend projects involving large-scale data handling and API improvements. Your technical leadership will help evolve our infrastructure and mentor other engineers as we scale.

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

Experience
5+ years in Backend Software Engineering, with a focus on complex systems, data pipelines, and API development.
Expertise with backend languages such as JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js); additional experience with Python, Go, or Java is a plus.
Strong experience with MySQL/PostgreSQL and MongoDB, including schema design and query optimisation.
Cloud experience (AWS preferred), with services relevant to backend development such as compute, databases, and messaging queues.
Solid understanding of API design and optimisation for performance and security.
Familiarity with ETL/ELT processes and scalable data pipelines.

Technical Skills
Strong problem-solving and systems design capabilities.
Knowledge of distributed systems, micro-services architecture, and asynchronous processing.
Experience with Docker (and ideally Kubernetes) is a bonus.

Leadership & Communication
Excellent communication skills and the ability to guide technical decisions across teams.
Passion for building scalable, data-intensive systems in a fast-paced environment.
Experience in startup, SaaS, or marketing technology companies is a plus.
Curiosity and a drive to stay current with backend tech, data engineering, and cloud services.
