**Job Title**
Technical Operations Manager
**Role Summary**
Lead the design, commissioning, operation, and continuous improvement of Canadian Biojet Fuel Laboratories’ (CBFL) pilot and demonstration plants for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Bridge engineering and operations to deliver timely, safe, and efficient plant performance while mentoring a multidisciplinary team and supporting future commercial plant development.
**Expectations**
- Deliver pilot‑plant operations that meet project milestones and safety standards.
- Translate operational data into process improvements and design iterations for scale‑up.
- Provide 24/7 support and emergency response during plant uptime.
- Foster a collaborative, high‑performance team culture.
- Communicate technical performance and progress to senior leadership and external partners.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Design, fabricate, and commission MPC pilot systems (MATJ, FT) and future demonstration plants.
- Operate and optimize pilot plants, ensuring continual process improvement and cost efficiency.
- Lead safety program: conduct HAZOP, MOC, and crisis management; maintain compliance with Process Safety Management frameworks.
- Mentor and train operators, process engineers, and maintenance staff on new equipment and SOPs.
- Analyze process data using Aspen Plus/HYSYS, Python, Excel, PI Historian; produce clear technical reports.
- Coordinate cross‑functional activities (engineering, maintenance, QA/QC, regulatory) and schedule plant expansions or redesigns.
- Maintain supply chain liaison for equipment and consumables; manage vendor performance.
- Support partner facilities (e.g., University of Alberta) during commissioning and technical alignment visits.
**Required Skills**
- Process engineering expertise in fuel, petrochemical, or catalytic systems.
- Proficiency in Aspen Plus / HYSYS and mass/energy balance calculations.
- Strong data‑analysis skills (Python, Excel, PI Historian).
- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to prepare clear technical reports.
- Leadership skills: team management, mentorship, cross‑disciplinary collaboration.
- Safety mindset; experience with Process Safety Management, HAZOP, MOC.
- Troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
- Ability to work flexible hours for 24‑7 plant support.
**Required Education & Certifications**
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering (or equivalent, with at least 15 years of relevant experience).
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation.
- Proven experience in fuels, petrochemicals, refining, or related process industries.
