Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid - 3 Days Onsite / 2 Days Remote until Oct 2025; 4 Days Onsite from Oct 20, 2025; Fully Onsite from Jan 5, 2026)
Duration: 12 Months (Approx. 250 Business Days, with possible 1-time extension)

Job Description:
We're seeking a Data Scientist to support a large-scale Data & AI transformation initiative within the Ontario public sector. This role is part of an enterprise effort to enhance data capabilities and enable a modern data platform ecosystem that integrates data ingestion, storage, processing, visualization, and governance.
The successful candidate will work on analytical initiatives and data science projects that drive innovation, operational efficiency, and evidence-based decision-making. This position requires strong technical expertise in Azure data tools, machine learning, and statistical modeling--combined with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the design, development, and delivery of analytical and statistical models that provide actionable insights.
* Execute and monitor inference jobs using Databricks, MLflow, and related data science tools, ensuring accuracy and reproducibility.
* Build, evaluate, and optimize machine learning models and data pipelines to support high-impact business use cases.
* Prepare, clean, and structure large, complex datasets (structured and unstructured) for analysis and modeling.
* Collaborate with Data Architects, ETL Developers, and business stakeholders to define analytical requirements and deliver high-quality data solutions.
* Communicate quantitative findings clearly through data visualizations, reports, and presentations.
* Document processes, maintain reproducible scripts, and support model evaluation using internal metrics.
* Apply best practices in data management, data transformation, and performance tracking to ensure consistency and reliability.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
* Proven hands-on experience with Azure data tools, including Azure Databricks, MLflow, and Python.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
* Proficiency in Python and libraries such as pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, and PyTorch.
* Familiarity with LLM frameworks (e.g., DSPy, LangChain, Hugging Face) is an asset.
* Experience managing and analyzing large, complex datasets from multiple sources.
* Excellent communication skills for conveying complex analytical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
* Experience building reproducible, well-documented analytical workflows and scripts.
Nice to Have Skills:
* Knowledge of statistical analysis, data mining, NLP, and predictive modeling.
* Experience with R, SAS, SPSS, PowerPivot, or Matlab.
* Familiarity with data governance, data quality, and BI/analytics lifecycle in large enterprises or government settings.
* Experience working with data marketplace or AI platform ecosystems.
* Strong consultative and stakeholder management skills.
