Job Title: Technical Analyst - Data & Tenant Discovery (Applications, Identity & Unstructured Data)
Role Summary
We are seeking a highly capable and versatile Technical Analyst (Contractor) to support enterprise-scale migration and transformation programmes. This role will involve leading and contributing to discovery and analysis activities across applications, identity/authentication, unstructured data, users, devices, and organisational structures.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in application and data discovery, file server and unstructured data analysis, identity and authentication assessments, and migration readiness. You will play a key role in providing insights to design and deliver secure, efficient, and seamless migration strategies to Microsoft 365 platforms (Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams).
The programme is a Digital Workplace initiative, aiming to consolidate disparate UK divisions into a central UK-wide enterprise IT capability.
Key Deliverables
Application & Data Estate Analysis:
Inventory and assess applications, dependencies, and hosting platforms.
Discovery and analysis of unstructured data across file servers (volumes, usage patterns, ROT data, permissions).
Recommendations for data rationalisation, ownership assignment, and migration readiness.
Authentication & Identity Analysis:
Assess authentication methods (AD, LDAP, Kerberos, OAuth, SAML, OpenID Connect).
Identify legacy barriers and recommend remediation for modern identity platforms (Azure AD / Entra ID).
User, Device & Mailbox Discovery:
Map accounts, groups, roles, and devices for compliance and migration readiness.
Perform Exchange mailbox and shared mailbox analysis.
Organisational & Governance Discovery:
Analyse directory structures (OUs, group policies, RBAC models).
Identify collaboration requirements, governance implications, and security risks.
Provide input on information architecture, metadata tagging, and retention policies.
Reporting & Documentation:
Produce detailed reports, dashboards, and technical documentation to inform migration wave planning and decision-making.
Support runbooks, remediation plans, and readiness assessments.
Key Responsibilities
Perform deep technical discovery across applications, file servers, identity systems, users, devices, and unstructured data.
Engage with application owners, business units, and infrastructure teams to validate findings and resolve data gaps.
Analyse permissions (NTFS, ACLs, role-based access) to support secure migration planning.
Identify and document risks, dependencies, and blockers to migration.
Provide technical input on governance, compliance, and adoption strategies for M365.
Collaborate with migration engineers, architects, and programme teams to align discovery with execution.
Required Skills & Experience
Strong technical analysis experience in large-scale migration, tenant consolidation, or data transformation programmes.
Hands-on expertise in:
Application & Data Discovery (legacy, web, SaaS, file servers, unstructured data)
Identity & Authentication Protocols (AD, LDAP, Kerberos, SAML, OAuth, OpenID Connect)
User & Device Analysis (Azure AD/Entra ID, Intune, SCCM, hybrid AD environments)
M365 Services (Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams)
Permissions & Security (NTFS, ACLs, governance, compliance frameworks)
Experience with data discovery/migration tools (ShareGate, AvePoint, Metalogix, Microsoft Mover, PowerShell scripting).
Excellent data analysis and reporting skills (Excel, Power BI desirable).
Strong communication and documentation skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant migrations or file server to SharePoint Online programmes.
Awareness of security, compliance, and governance requirements (GDPR, ISO 27001).
Familiarity with adoption and change management within Microsoft 365 ecosystems.
Working Location
Hybrid working with travel (approx. 2-3 days per week onsite) to the Yeovil, Somerset site to build stakeholder engagement and relationships.
Fully remote is not viable; expect upwards of 50% onsite with business and IT stakeholders.
