About the Role:

Job Title: Software Design Engineer in Test

Location: Redmond, WA (3 days onsite)

Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Software Design Engineer in Test (SDET 3) with a strong development background in C and Python to join core engineering team. This role blends low-level systems development with test automation, working on next-generation firmware and device driver validation in cutting-edge data center and cluster environments.

The ideal candidate is a developer first with testing expertise, capable of designing, coding, and validating solutions in complex hardware-software ecosystems. Experience with Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and virtual machine configuration is essential. Familiarity with Rust is a plus, and a willingness to learn it on the job is expected.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain low-level firmware and device driver code for Microsoft's server and data center hardware.
Build automation frameworks and validation tools to ensure quality and reliability of firmware releases.
Integrate development and test workflows using Azure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
Configure and manage VMs, clusters, and lab environments for development and testing.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams to design scalable test systems.
Debug, analyze, and optimize code for performance and stability across Intel, AMD, and ARM platforms.
Contribute to continuous improvement by developing innovative solutions for validation and automation challenges.

Technical Environment

Hardware: Intel and AMD blades; ARM blade for test and validation.
Operating Systems: Azure Hosts (2022, 2024), Windows Server 2022, Windows 10 (VM Guests).
Infrastructure: Local lab racks, clustered environments, and large-scale data center setups.
Tools & Platforms: Azure DevOps, Git, CI/CD Pipelines, Virtualization tools.

Required Qualifications

5-7 years of professional experience in software development or test engineering (flexible for exceptional candidates).
Strong coding proficiency in C and Python (mandatory).
Hands-on experience with device drivers, firmware, or low-level systems development.
Experience working in lab, data center, or clustered hardware environments.
Knowledge of test automation, validation frameworks, and CI/CD processes.
Familiarity with Azure DevOps, Git, and modern build pipelines.
Solid understanding of OS internals, virtualization, and networking fundamentals.

Salary Range: The salary for this position is between $110000- $120000 annually. Factors which may affect pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
