The Team:

The development team of 15 engineers is part of the broader group which supports the Mercury platform. Other teams include DevOps, SecOps, Solutions, and Product. The entire Mercury team is relatively small, but thanks to our dedicated and talented staff, we are able to support a large, heavily-used ecosystem.

The Role:

We are looking for an experienced Software Engineering Manager to help lead and empower our in-house development team. In this role you’ll focus on managing people, cultivating a productive working environment, improving internal tooling, ensuring project execution, and communicating with external stakeholders. You will not be coding day-to-day, but you will help guide decisions on technical strategy, plan and communicate effectively, and make sure the development team is well equipped to build scalable, reliable systems. With your help, we aim to further strengthen and build up the team in order to support the next level of growth for the platform.

Remote: This role is open to a fully remote position or hybrid with one of our offices, if preferred.

Responsibilities:

Lead, mentor, and empower a remote team of engineers to achieve at high levels
Foster a culture of technical excellence and innovation
Advise and assist in development team recruitment efforts
Own capacity planning, performance and efficiency measurement for the development team
Monitor and assist in the timely completion of projects; helping teams estimate, plan, and deliver
Communicate project statuses externally to Product, Solutions, and other business stakeholders
Provide technical guidance to Solutions and Product teams in feature request evaluation and platform fit
Drive continuous improvement in developer tooling, QA and automated testing, service performance, and observability to improve the developer experience
Ensure that technical debt is addressed, while platform stability, scalability, and security are prioritized
Contribute to technical platform leadership along with senior team members

Qualifications:

4+ years of experience as a web software developer
5+ years of experience leading a development team
Proven ability to manage, mentor, and empower development teams
Experience measuring team performance and improving productivity
Experience working with a large-scale web-based SaaS platform
Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Should be comfortable communicating with non-technical business colleagues in addition to engineers.
Strong organizational and administrative skills
Comfortable working and adapting within a flexible and changing business environment
A strong work ethic and self-motivated, with a desire to contribute and always be improving

Nice to Have:

Direct experience with our current platforms and technologies (Gitlab CI/CD, Jenkins, NewRelic, PHP, PHPUnit, Mysql)
A deep familiarity with, and care for, best practices throughout the system design and software development lifecycle
Technical ability to jump in and contribute directly on technical tasks if needed

Position Pay Range

130,000.00 - $140,000.00 per annum.
This position qualifies for a performance bonus
