R&D Engineering Manager Job Summary:
This job is full-time on-site at our Vaughan (Toronto), Ontario, Canada location which is conveniently located near YYZ Airport at 25 Interchange way near the intersection of Hwy 400 and Hwy 407. The site is home to our corporate headquarters and and a short seven-minute walk to the Vaughan Metropolitan Center subway station. Limited travel is expected when necessary to meet with clients and/or review product performance on-site.

The R&D Engineering Manager will directly oversee one or many R&D program consisting of hardware, firmware and software for the company’s real-time, embedded life-safety or building technology projects. The position reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) while working closely closely with members of the Engineering, Operations, and Product Management departments. The best candidate will have experience navigating an aggressive NPI roadmap while also working with customer-facing teams to support our current offering adoption and maintenance. As a mid-size, growth oriented firm, we are looking to keep organized yet flexible while scaling to new heights.

The primary role of the project/program manager is to guide the development resources to plan and act on their daily and weekly activities while re-prioritizing backlog and adjusting resource assignments when necessary. A keen understanding of the customer value proposition of the company will assist you in managing resource bottlenecks and making business cases to invest in staffing changes when necessary. A strong working relationship with our customer facing teams will provide contstant inputs to the R&D teams that need to be managed against the existing workload.

Key Responsibilities:

Work with the R&D Engineering team to schedule, validate and package for delivery features and enhancements to the product portfolio
Interact with QA team to validate R&D activities
Interact with Product Management to prioritize backlog and assign resources appropriately
Translate field feedback into engineering requirements and assign and prioritize activities for the team
Manage stakeholder expectations throughout the development process
Test and evaluate hardware and software for new and upgraded products and systems as a part of the Engineering Department's testing and quality assurance process.
Review and Sign-off on the work activities of the team
Provide development support and guidance
Ensure team has appropriate learning and development plans in place to grow skills
Identify and escalate risks and challenges to milestone completion appropriately
Be a primary point of contact to mitigate issues and find solutions to the problems at hand

Requirements and Skills:

A Bachelor's (or higher) degree in electrical engineering or a related field
Five or more years experience as a product designer or developer
Knowledge of real-time embedded systems
Ability to speak technically with Hardware, Software and Mechanical designers
Ability to communicate on business topics with c-suite executives
Financial Acument including understanding of budgets, roadmaps, P&L and forecasts
Familiarity with Electrical Codes and Standards, espeicially certification/compliance standards
Exceptional Project Management aptitude - ability to plan, execute, and close projects including task definition, scheduling and budget management
Troubleshooting and analysis: Strong analytical skills to troublesshoot issues, analyze data, and make informed decisions
Leadership: The ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team of engineers and designers
