What You Will Be Doing

We are currently looking for a Data Scientist, specialized in AI/ML to join Umicore's corporate data science team in Olen. In this role you'll be working on complex, diverse datasets for our various Business Units. You'll focus on extracting insights from experimental and process data, including time-series, imaging, and structured databases, to support projects such as battery material optimization.

Responsibilities

Technical delivery: Lead and execute the technical development of AI/ML solutions in high-impact, strategic projects across Umicore - from data exploration to building and validation of advanced machine learning models.
Strategic involvement: Provide technical vision and thought leadership, inspiring both technical and non-technical stakeholders on the transformative potential of AI.
Mentorship: Act as a technical coach and mentor for junior data scientists and contribute to the overall skill development within the team..
Collaboration & communication: Work closely with an international team of diverse backgrounds, including engineers, product managers and other stakeholders to integrate AI solutions into production processes and ensure ongoing improvements.
Work with stakeholders across the organization to identify opportunities and carve out a technical approach to achieve business targets
Continuous improvement: Stay up-to-date with AI advancements and promote best practices in responsible and effective AI use.

Requirements

Who we are looking for

PhD (preferred) or Master’s degree in AI, combined with engineering, sciences, or applied mathematics.
8+ years applied data science / ML experience (industrial/IOT data preferred), with track record from prototype to production
Recognized expertise in a broad set of AI/ML approaches and techniques, e.g., clustering, decision trees, neural networks, advanced statistical methods.
Good understanding of the specific needs of large manufacturing companies
Demonstrated coding skills in Python.
Understanding of cloud deployment; experience in Azure Databricks, MLflow, and Azure Machine Learning is preferred.
Fluent English (both written and spoken)
Good internal & external networking skills.
Ability to understand business unit strategy and priorities relevant to the projects.
Functional leadership skills to guide Associate Scientists and their teams towards successful execution of their projects.
Creativity in science and technology.
Target oriented
Planning and organization skills
Strong oral and written reporting skills
