Test Automation Engineer (Freelance) – 12 months – Brussels

About the Role
Our client is seeking an expert Test Automation Engineer to join a high-impact, strategic project in Brussels. As a key builder in this initiative, you will architect, automate, and drive the quality assurance process for complex applications in an Agile environment. This freelance opportunity is designed for those who thrive on ownership, mentorship, and delivering real outcomes — not just ticking boxes.

What You’ll Be Doing
Designing and prioritizing robust test strategies, scenarios, and automated test suites for functional, integration, and API/data testing
Executing a full spectrum of tests: functional, integration, automated, exploratory, and risk-based
Maintaining and extending test frameworks and automation pipelines to ensure continuous quality
Collaborating within Agile teams using the 3 Amigos approach, coordinating testing activities, and coaching junior and intermediate testers
Championing testing best practices and driving quality improvements across the organization
What We’re Looking For
Ownership mindset with a passion for building, not just testing
Proven problem-solver who thrives in fast-paced, Agile environments
Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in functional, integration, automation, and API/data testing
Experience mentoring or coaching junior testers
Ideally, 2+ years of experience in the public sector or IPSS environments
Technical Skills
Test automation tools: Cucumber, Cypress, Karate, Postman, Ranorex, Gatling
Programming and scripting: Java, CSS, XML, jQuery
Version control and project management: Git, JIRA
Test frameworks and automation pipelines
Database knowledge and basic SQL
Agile/Scrum methodologies
Language Proficiency
Fluency in French, Dutch, and English is required (trilingual)
Other Requirements
IT graduate degree (programming or related field)
ISTQB Foundation certification
Full-time, onsite presence in Brussels (no remote work)
Freelance contract for 12 months
