Job Specifications
Our oil and gas client is hiring a Senior Technical Business Analyst to help build a new in-house production operations application. This role sits at the intersection of business and engineering: you’ll translate evolving business needs into well-structured user stories, proactively resolve ambiguity, and partner closely with a small, fast-moving development team.
This role will be onsite 3 days near downtown Houston (non-negotiable)
Current stage: Early planning/design. We have a high-level direction, but many details are still being defined. You must be comfortable operating in ambiguity with shifting priorities and bringing structure through rigorous discovery, validation, and clear documentation.
Environment: Agile (weekly sprints), lean team (4 developers + PO/SMEs), many concurrent stories (30–40 active for the BA cohort), highly collaborative, and high-visibility initiative for 2026 and beyond.
Responsibilities
Elicit & refine requirements with Product Owner and business SMEs; transform needs into clear user stories, acceptance criteria, business rules, and edge cases that reflect end-to-end workflows.
Run a consistent validation loop: draft → review with SMEs/PO → confirm scope and boundaries → finalize for sprint planning.
Surface and resolve ambiguity early—call out unclear terminology, conflicting rules, missing data, or overlapping boundaries; propose options.
Partner with developers to estimate/score stories, clarify technical implications, and ensure shared understanding.
Perform basic data validation (e.g., draft/execute simple SQL) and coordinate with data teams to obtain queries or data definitions as needed.
Write test cases for user stories and coordinate UAT to confirm that delivered functionality meets the business need before each release.
Facilitate backlog management: prioritize, split, and sequence work to maintain flow across multiple concurrent stories.
Change management & approvals: ensure sign‑offs with the Product Owner/Senior product manager prior to release.
Required Qualifications
5+ years as a Business Analyst on custom software (product or platform) initiatives.
Demonstrated Agile/Scrum delivery with backlog ownership and story lifecycle accountability.
Proven critical thinking: able to identify gaps, dependencies, and edge cases; challenges assumptions.
Strong written and verbal communication with a track record of proactive stakeholder validation.
Technical fluency: understands FE/BE/API concepts; can read/write basic SQL; comfortable discussing data sources and integration points.
History of taking initiative and collaborating across teams to unblock progress in a less-structured environment.
Tech & Product Context
Stack: .NET Core / Angular; hosted in Azure.
Data: Heavy dependency on PI historian for real-time and historical operations data.
Product scope: Facilities surveillance, optimization, downtime entry, testing; evolving toward real-time data, analytics, closed-loop control, and automated facilities processes.
Additional Skills & QualificationsTop Skills & Requirements (Must-Have)
Senior BA (5+ years) in custom application development: Strong SDLC knowledge and Agile/Scrum delivery with active backlog ownership.
Technical BA capabilities (not a developer): Comfort discussing front end vs. back end, APIs, and data flows. Able to write/execute basic SQL queries to validate data and support story refinement. Confident partnering with developers to clarify technical implications and estimate stories.
Exceptional critical thinking & ambiguity handling: Proactively identifies unclear requirements, edge cases, and dependencies.Asks targeted clarifying questions; does not fill gaps with assumptions.
Validation & communication discipline: Uses a “draft → review → confirm” loop with Product Owner/SMEs before sprint ceremonies.
Translates business needs into precise user stories with acceptance criteria, business rules, and edge cases that align to end‑to‑end workflows.
Initiative & cross-team collaboration: Willing and able to reach out to other teams (e.g., data owners) to obtain queries/info. Comfortable driving progress in a less-structured, evolving environment.
Nice-to-Have
Oil & Gas production operations domain familiarity (e.g., production engineering, drilling & completions, facilities)—helpful but not required.
Experience with PI historian–dependent systems.
Azure DevOps (boards/repos) exposure; Jira experience is fine.
Familiarity with .NET Core/Angular products and data pipelines.
Employee Value Proposition (EVP)-Work as a contract professional with a growing Oil & Gas leader in Houston that’s investing in next-gen capabilities and low‑carbon ventures.
High visibility, multi-year initiative with strong runway and hands-on collaboration across business and engineering.
Lean, empowered teams—you’ll stretch beyond a narrow BA remit and build broad product delivery experience.
9/80 schedule and a hybrid model that balances focus time and in‑person
