Head of AI & Data Science
London - Hybrid
Up to £150,000 + bonus + car allowance
VIQU has partnered with a leading organisation within the insurance sector undergoing significant transformation, as they continue to invest in data and AI capabilities across their commercial lines business. They are now seeking a Head of AI & Data Science to join their Chief Data Office, responsible for establishing and scaling AI capability, driving AI adoption across the organisation, and building out governance frameworks. This role will combine hands-on data science expertise with strategic leadership, working closely with senior stakeholders in both the UK and internationally to deliver AI-driven business value.
Key Responsibilities of the Head of AI & Data Science:
Define and deliver the organisation’s AI and data science strategy, aligned to wider business and technology objectives.
Establish and build an AI capability, including developing an AI Centre of Excellence from the ground up.
Lead the design, development, and deployment of AI and machine learning solutions to deliver tangible business value.
Develop and implement AI governance and responsible AI frameworks, ensuring compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.
Drive AI adoption across the business, identifying and delivering high-impact use cases.
Provide thought leadership on emerging AI trends, ensuring the organisation remains at the forefront of innovation.
Build, mentor, and scale a high-performing team of data scientists and AI specialists.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including technology, risk, and business functions, to embed AI capabilities.
Engage with senior stakeholders and executive leadership, communicating progress, value, and opportunities effectively.
Essential Requirements of the Head of AI & Data Science:
Extensive background in data science, machine learning, and AI, with strong hands-on experience earlier in career.
Proven experience building and scaling AI or data science teams or functions.
Strong understanding of AI governance, responsible AI, and working within regulated environments.
Experience within the insurance sector or a closely related regulated industry such as financial services.
Ability to operate at both a strategic and hands-on level, with strong stakeholder engagement skills.
Experience presenting to senior stakeholders and operating within executive-level environments.
Strong knowledge of cloud-based platforms (e.g. Azure) and modern AI/ML tooling.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
