Main Purpose of the Role
The Head of Technical Services is responsible for leading and evolving the firm’s technology and digital infrastructure, ensuring systems are secure, efficient, and strategically aligned with the firm’s goals.
This is a hands-on leadership role combining operational excellence with forward-looking innovation. The postholder will play a key role in modernising the firm’s technology landscape, strengthening cyber resilience, and driving the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation to enhance client service and internal efficiency.
A central focus will be on supporting and improving the firm’s Case Management Systems (CMS), including Proclaim and other legal CMS platforms, ensuring they are robust, secure, and effectively integrated across the business.
Key Responsibilities
1. Systems & Infrastructure Management
Oversee all aspects of the firm’s IT and technical infrastructure, including networks, cloud environments, servers, and endpoints across multiple offices.
Ensure the performance, security, and continuous improvement of Proclaim and other legal CMS platforms, including integrations with document management, finance, and communications systems.
Supporting our CMS team with productivity and profitability in departments.
Manage software patching, upgrades, configuration, and full lifecycle documentation.
Support hybrid working through secure connectivity, VPN management, and device compliance.
2. Cybersecurity & Compliance
Lead on all aspects of cybersecurity, ensuring the highest standards of protection for client and firm data.
Develop and maintain a proactive cyber defence programme, including threat detection, penetration testing, vulnerability management, and incident response.
Foster a “security-first” culture across all staff through regular training and awareness campaigns.
Ensure full compliance with GDPR, SRA guidelines, Cyber Essentials Plus, and other relevant legal and regulatory standards.
Manage relationships with cybersecurity partners, auditors, and external specialists to maintain and enhance resilience.
3. Strategic, Team & Third-Party Leadership
Develop and implement the firm’s Technology Strategy, ensuring it supports the firm’s business objectives and future growth.
Lead digital transformation initiatives that incorporate AI, data analytics, and workflow automation into legal operations.
Advise the board and senior management on emerging technologies, cybersecurity risks, and opportunities for innovation.
Build and maintain a technology roadmap that ensures the firm remains secure, competitive, and technologically advanced.
Lead, motivate, and develop the internal Technical Services team, promoting a culture of excellence, accountability, and professional growth.
Manage external vendors, Managed Service Providers (MSPs), and technology partners to ensure effective delivery and best value.
Oversee procurement, contract management, and licensing within agreed budgets.
Maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders across all departments to ensure technology effectively supports operational and strategic needs.
4. AI & Legal Technology Integration
Evaluate, pilot, and implement AI-driven technologies that improve legal service delivery, including document automation, case analytics, and intelligent search tools.
Collaborate with partners and legal teams to identify where AI can enhance efficiency, accuracy, and client outcomes.
Establish frameworks for responsible AI governance to ensure compliance, transparency, and ethical usage.
5. Operational Support & Service Delivery
Provide 2nd and 3rd line support for complex technical issues, particularly those affecting legal CMS and business-critical systems.
Oversee the service desk function to ensure responsive and high-quality support across all offices.
Maintain comprehensive documentation, policies, and procedures for all systems and processes.
Deliver user training and guidance to ensure optimal use
